Most people try to read every word in their head when they read. Doing this will only get you to read as fast as you can speak - not very fast at all. Once you have learned to read without sub-vocalizing words, your reading speeds will go through the roof in a very short amount of time. And the only way to maintain those high speeds with high levels of comprehension and retention is to practice frequently.
