Saves the current page as an Internet shortcut file on Windows, Mac, and Linux.-Description-
This extension offers the feature of being able to save the current page as an Internet shortcut file on Windows, Mac, and Linux.
Personally, I've always used Internet shortcut files ("ISFs", from here on) for a multitude of reasons. For example, I use them:
1. To passively share links to content with people via shared folders
2. To supersede the temporary use of pinned tabs and bookmarks
3. As portable links
4. To accompany resources (installers with links to the websites, projects with links to assets, etc)
But, I've always found them so awkward to create. Hence, this extension.
-FAQ-
Q: Why can't I choose where to save the download?
A: The downloading process just uses the standard Chrome downloader and its settings, which I can't modify from within the extension.
I recommend enabling the "Ask where to save each file before downloading" option in Chrome > "Settings" > "Show advanced settings..." > "Downloads", which will let you choose where to save files each time.
Q: Why won't an ISF I saved on one operating system open on another?
A: This is due to there being no standard for ISFs and, therefore, each operating system has a very different way of handling them. For example, an ISF saved on Windows will not work on Mac OS X because the operating system simply doesn't know what to do with it because it's not one of its own. There's literally nothing I can do about this, unfortunately.
Q: Why would I use this over hyperlinks?
A: Well, as I highlighted in the description, I find that it's MUCH easier to simply double-click on the ISF, which automatically opens my default browser to the right page, than to:
1. open a browser
2. browse to my emails / webpage
3. sign in
4. find the link that was sent to me
5. click on the link
OR
1. open a text editor
2. open a text file that contains the URL
3. open a browser
4. highlight which URL you want
4. copy and paste the URL into the browser
