七十二候とは、「立春」などの二十四節気をさらに五つに分けたもので、気象の動きや動植物の変化を知らせる短文で構成された、季節を表現する伝統的な言葉です。
たとえば、
- 蟄虫啓戸（すごもりむしとをひらく）: 冬蘢りの虫が出て来る
- 雷乃発声（かみなりすなわちこえをはっす）: 遠くで雷の音がし始める
など、昔の暮らしが季節と密着していたことを思わせる表現が多く使われています。
