Wilcox County is known for agriculture, and peanuts, cotton, watermelons, and cantaloupes are the primary crops. WCS is the largest employer in the county with 187 employees, and the school district serves approximately 1,300 students.
WCS has a rich tradition of academics, athletics, and the arts. The lone high school in the county, Wilcox County High School, has traditionally boasted some of the highest graduation rates in the local RESA district. Just this past fall, juniors at WCHS scored the highest on the Georgia High School Writing Test when compared to other high schools in the RESA district.
In athletics, WCHS varsity sports have established a winning reputation, winning a 2009 State Championship in football. The school mascot, the Patriots, is synonymous with success: hosting a state semi-final in football this season, playing in the state finals in boys basketball this season, and having a former football player now starting in the NFL.
In the arts, WCHS has repeatedly placed regionally in One Act Play and Literary, and the elementary school, Wilcox County Elementary School, has placed on the state level in the Georgia Movie Academy competition.
Wilcox County Middle School continues to achieve at high levels on the state standardized test, the CRCT, with seventh grade scores near the top of the local RESA district. The WCMS sports teams consistently place near or at the top of its region.
